STATE
SERIES HUB · LIVE REFERENCE
What Britain pays. Who receives it. How the system works — and how it changes.
01 / 18
WELFARE ISN’T ONE THING.
It is pensions, Universal Credit, disability support, children, carers, housing costs and programmes layered on top of one another.
The argument gets easier once you can see the machine.

GO DEEPER
The numbers explain the system. They don’t end the argument.
SOURCES & METHOD
Every major figure should answer: what is it, when is it from, where does it cover, what kind of number is it, and who produced it?
Expenditure, claimants, UC, combinations, cap, sanctions, fraud/error and rates.
Welfare, economic and fiscal forecasts and policy costings.
Budgets, tax, spending and tax-administered support.
Population, labour market, economy, legislation and Commons Library research.
YOU’VE REACHED THE END.
But the Welfare State hasn’t.
A system Britain built. A system Britain keeps changing. A system Britain has to decide how to finance.
